From Art 21: How do artists push beyond what they already know and readily see? Can acts of engagement and exploration be works of art in themselves? In this episode, artists use their practices as tools for personal and intellectual discovery, simultaneously documenting and producing new realities in the process.

Artists presented will be Thomas Hirschhorn, Graciela Iturbide and Leonardo Drew.

The Sleeth Gallery and WVWC Art Department will be screening a new episode of PBS’s series, Art 21, on Thursday, March 21 at 5:30pm in the gallery, located on the first floor of McCuskey Hall.

‘Ecology’ focuses on the cultural understandings and definitions of nature, examining the works of artists Robert Adams, Mark Dion, Iñigo Manglano-Ovalle, and Ursula von Rydingsvard (pictured above).

Spring 2013 – Stories

The Sleeth Gallery and WVWC Art Department will be screening our fourth episode of PBS’s series, Art 21, on Thursday, February 28 at 5:30pm in the gallery. ‘Stories’ examines the role of storytelling and narrative within the realm of contemporary art, as not only subject but also as an evolution of the narrative tradition and examination / representation of the world around us. Artists featured in this episode will be Charles Atlas, Kara Walker, Kiki Smith (above), Do-Ho Suh and Trenton Doyle Hancock.

Admission is free, and all are welcome.

The Sleeth Gallery will be closed the week of March 4 – 8 for Spring Break, and will open again the following week for the 2013 WVWC Student Juried Exhibition.

This episode explores how artists explore popular concepts of faith, belief, meditation and religious symbols, featuring the works of Beryl Korot, Ann Hamilton (above), John Feodorov, Shahzia Sikander and James Turrell

The Sleeth Gallery and WVWC Art Department are proud to announce a semester-long screening of PBS’s series, Art21. The first offering of the semester will be ‘Change,’ featuring the works of Ai Wei Wei (above), Catherine Opie and El Anatsui, and it will be held at 5:30pm on Thursday, January 31 in the Sleeth Gallery.

Admission is free, and all are welcome.

The next screening will take place on February 14th, celebrating ‘Romance’ in honor of St. Valentine’s Day.
